Text: Conceptual Physics
Class: Physics Pre-AP and Regular

Description:
The purpose of the course is to provide the student an introduction into the concepts that relate to Conceptual Physics and AP Physics. In order for the student to be successful in the class he or she must have knowledge of Algebraic concepts. It will be conducted at a college level pace.

Goals:
The student will demonstrate mastery of objectives covered in class
The student will be able to function in a High School Science Lab setting.

Requirements:
On a daily basis the student must bring to class his or her text book (if issued), a pencil, a scientific calculator, and a notebook. If student is not prepared then success will not occur.

Evaluation:
The student will be evaluated daily by the instructor. The student will also be evaluated weekly with the completion of a quiz, and every six weeks with the completion of an exam. All work must be original. If a student is found guilty of falsifying work then all credit for assignment will be lost.

Projects:
The student will also be assigned projects throughout the school year. These projects will be conducted individually or in groups.

Rules:
The student is expected to abide by the rules set forth in the Student Code of Conduct at Edcouch-Elsa ISD. It is important to remember that you are enrolled in this class to learn. If you are not aligned with this endeavor then you will not succeed. In addition failure to do abide by Student code of conduct will result in disciplinary action.

Absences:
It is not recommended that a student be absent. If a student is absent it is important that the student make arrangements to catch up on any missing assignments.

Topics to be covered:

Scientific Method, Vector Addition, Kinematics, Motion in Two Dimensions, Graph Motion, Conservation of Energy and Momentum, Conservation of Energy and Momentum, Simple Machines
Properties of Matter, Thermodynamics, Sound, and Waves, Electric Circuits, Electromagnetic Waves, and Light

Examinations:
Six Weeks Exam will be conducted at the end of each six weeks period. These will consist of both multiple choice and free response questions. Semester Exams will be conducted at the end of the Fall and Spring Semesters. They will follow the same format as Six Weeks Exams and will be cumulative.

The following is the expected format for completing all free response work.

Sample Problem
Donovan Bailey of Canada broke the world record in the 100m dash at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics with a time of 9.84 seconds. With this gold medal, he became "the world's fastest man" What was his average velocity over this distance in meters per second?

Given                                                                                                                      Find
t= 9.84 s                                                                                                                s= m/s
d= 100m

Formula
s= d/t
s= 100m / 9.84s
10.16 m/s
10.2 m/s

This format must be followed in order to demonstrate that you have achieved mastery of the concepts. It must be followed for all assignments; homework, quizzes, tests or exams. Failure to do so will result in forfeit of points.

Assignments must be neat and completed in pencil. Assignments in pen will not be accepted.
Late work will not be accepted. A due date is set for a reason.

You will be given a formula chart. Don’t bother memorizing them. I prefer that you know how to use them. Keep in mind that I will be available throughout the year to assist you. If you do not ask for help I will assume that you understand.
